Recipe: Making gel from Irish sea moss
COOK
Take 25 grams of sea moss
Put it in a colander and rinse it well under the tap. It is nice and clean seaweed, but still look for any hard or ugly bits and take them out .
Put it in a pan and soak for 15 minutes in 500 to 600 ml of clean water. Bring it to a boil, stirring, and simmer very gently for a few minutes .
Blend until you have a nice smooth gel (preferably with a hand blender ).
Put it in a sealable jar and let it cool and then put it in the refrigerator. It will then thicken a little more. You can also freeze it. Do not keep longer than 10 days in the refrigerator .
If you find the gel too thick, you can add water but also lemon and/or orange juice for an extra vitamin boost .
HEATING
If you do not want to boil the Sea moss, you can also choose to heat it, after soaking, to 30°/40°C (2 to 3 minutes on medium-high heat) and then blend well.
SOAK
If you choose not to boil or heat it, after washing the seaweed, let it soak for 2 to 3 hours(longer will do.) Then blend it well. Preferably with a hand blender. Put it in the refrigerator for 2 á 3 hours. Blend well again and let it continue to thicken overnight. The next morning you will have a full-bodied gel .
The general advice is that you should get about 5 grams of dried seaweed per day, with daily consumption. So whether you make the gel with a liter of water or with 500 ml, you may consume the gel you make from 25 grams of Sea moss, within 5 days!
